What drives the cost of outplacement services

Three things move the price of an outplacement program:

  1. Level of the employee. Executives need more: assessments, a dedicated coach and in-person time. Individual contributors are best served by strong tools, resume support and a live job feed.
  2. Volume. Larger reductions in force are priced per employee at volume.
  3. Duration. Longer engagements cost more, and are worth it for senior roles, where searches take longer.

Outplacement vs. the cost of not offering it

Outplacement is usually a small fraction of a severance package. Set it against the cost of a damaged employer brand (a poor reputation can cost up to 10% more per hire), disengaged survivors, longer unemployment claims and the risk of litigation, and it typically pays for itself.
